Evan tries windsurfing on the Gulf Coast at Marina Silcer Progreso

People are always asking us what there is for children to do in the Yucatan. LOTS! Every time we think of something, we have been able to find it in our area. We had heard about the possibility of children taking wind surfing lessons so two weeks ago, I started the search. The boys and I drove all over on the scooter before driving into the Marina Silcer in Progreso by the bridge to Chelem.  Thank you to all the kind people who pointed us in the right direction as we were going! Once inside the marina, we found all kinds of NEAT TOYS!! Yes, you can buy a paddleboard, kayaks, and all kinds of other things there also:) Anyways, we set up lessons for Evan and Noah to see if they would be able to do it. Today was Evan’s first day and he absolutely loved it!

The Marina Silcer we went to is located at km 25 between Progreso and Telchac Puerto in the Yucatan. You can find it just after the mile marker on the road and it is marked by a blue HOTEL sign pointing to the left. You must have your names on the list at the gate for entrance to the private club. Lots of parking available and it looked like a great spot to host a party.

Miguel was Evan’s personal instructor today and they started out by carrying the equipment to the ocean. Miguel then proceeded to teach Evan over the next hour how to get on the board, balance, pull up the sail, go forward, and was even working on turns by the end of the class.

The water this morning was quite calm, with a slight breeze which was perfect for learning.

We have been emailing with Leticia over the last two weeks to set up the appointments. Here is her contact information in case you require it.

What an awesome experience for Evan! It would not be easy for him to learn this fun sport in Calgary (or as much fun, I am sure).

Hi Tracey! Wind surfing would certainly be restricted in Calgary to a couple of months in the summer, classes here are just starting for the winter months! We actually discovered a dive camp for kids in Calgary while we were there this summer, next to the laser tag in the south. It would definitely be something worth doing with the kids over the winter months in Calgary, get them ready for any big excursions. We are also looking into a snorkel/scuba class for us all, we have several families that may all do this adventure together. We are not sure if any of us will like scuba diving, but until we try it we will not know.
