Carnaval Nueva Era 2012 Merida, Yucatan was an amazing opportunity to see fantastic costumes, dancing, and parades throughout the streets of Merida. This years festivities ran from the 15th to the 22nd of February and is one of the most important holidays in Mexico. More than 2500 dancers competed for first place as they displayed their costumes and dances around the city.
We went to the parade route on the Friday night and managed to stand right at the Monument to the Flags on Paseo de Montejo. The streets were lined with people and you could rent ‘private boxes’ or sit in the bleachers. We were lucky enough to find a spot right at the front and were able to see the parade as it started. I think next year the spot to watch this parade would be the rooftop patio at Cubaro’s!
I managed to bring our guests from Canada to this parade at the last minute and I am glad that I did. Part of our goal in the Yucatan is to experience as much of the culture as we can and we are still amazed at how many events are continually occurring in the area. This was another great cultural event which our boys, and ourselves, had not been exposed to before.
Prior to this Carnaval event, I had taken my parents and the boys to a costume contest at Aleman Parque in Merida.
