On Saturday, October 29 we went to Merida to see the Dia de los Muertos festivities. The restaurant Lyn chose was located right off Calle 60 where the procession walked by in the Corazon de Merida (Heart of Merida). Cafe Peon Contreras is one of the restaurants where on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights the restaurants and bars put their tables and chairs in the street creating an open air fiesta! This starts at 9pm -2am so our dinner at 7pm was a little early for the big fiesta but we got to enjoy our dinner while watching them set up for the later festivities.
While they feature ‘comida Yucateca’ Lyn and I each had the Fiesta Tacos for 100 pesos and Evan had his favourite, sopa de lima. We shared a taco and chips with mr grumpy pants. The tacos were ok, the sopa de lima was fabulous. Evan has really started to enjoy this soup everywhere we go and while there was not a lot of stuff in this soup he said the flavor was great and he slurped it up. Panchos has one of the best sopa de lima’s he has had, while Eladios has lots of stuff in it but not quite as flavorful.
Great setting on the street which they decorate with plants and umbrellas and lighting for the dining. There is an inside to the restaurant which I took pictures in but we did not go in. They have a big screen projector showing movies on the outside wall of the restaurant. They had a table set up with all their nightly features on it for the tourists walking by.
Our server was quite attentive, but we were his only table as the restaurant had just opened at 7pm. When we left at just after 8:30 there was 2 other tables but they were setting up for the night and looked like they expected quite a crowd.
