The Restaurante El Gallito is located just a couple of blocks away from the malecon in Progreso. Lyn & I first discovered it one day when wandering around the town waiting for the boys to finish school and we were starving. We had never before experienced a “Cocina Economica” but this one looked pretty clean from the outside. After a quick look at the menu, we decided it had enough selection to choose from as Lyn wanted breakfast and I wanted a sandwich. Some cocina economicas are as simple as dining at somebodies home who has taken the time to put a table out front on their patio/sidewalk and cook and serve you dinner/lunch. We have yet to stop at a smaller version of this style of dining but they are all over the town.
Lyn had the french toast and fruit with a pot of freshly brewed coffee. While one of the pieces of french toast was not cooked thoroughly, she ate the other one. I had a Mexican baguette, which was on a foot long piece of fresh french bread, served with fries for only 52 pesos.
I have been back to this cocina economica six times now since we have moved here for a quick lunch with the boys. Evan has had the burger with ‘jamon, tocina, y queso’ and prefers it with the jamon on the side as it makes the burger very difficult for him to handle as it slides off the bun. Noah and I always share a baguette and I have now had each of their baguettes and have enjoyed all of them!
The owner, speaks a little English, and is always ready to help and offer advice. If I happen to come in for lunch by myself, like I did on a couple of occasions while waiting for my scooter to be repaired, the waiters always ask where are the ‘ninos!’
This restaurant, even though it may appear at first glance to be having a slow day, has a fleet of delivery scooters which are constantly rushing food out their door. After dining here, even if you are the only guest sitting in the restaurant, you quickly see they are quite busy with take-out orders and delivery.
