Our first restaurant review in Merida is from a restaurant in the Santiago area called “La Casa de Frida” and came highly recommended for its specialty dish “Chile en Nogada.” We were very lucky to have Julia & Richard, from Seattle, who were also staying at the B&B join us for dinner to share their traveling stories.
A beautiful little restaurant which had a good menu selection for both appetizers and entrees. For an appetizer we shared the Guacamole servido con totopos. This was the first time we have had guacamole since coming to Merida and found it delightful, for 50 pesos it was worth it!
Lyn had the ‘Chile en Nogada’ which was a poblano pepper stuffed with
ground beef meat, cooked with apple, pear and plantain covered with pecan sauce and pomegranates. This dish was fantastic and although normally only prepared seasonally by most restaurants around Mexican Independance Day ~ this restaurant does a fantastic job year round. I would say this is a must have while dining at La Casa de Frida.
I choose the ‘Pato con Mole Poblano’ which was duck in mole sauce with a combination of 18 ingredients, among them three varieties of dried chilies, almonds, peanuts, tomatoes and chocolate! The sauce on this dish was terrific but I found the duck to be a little over cooked and was dry – so I really used the sauce to moisten it up.
Of course no restaurant would be complete without its very own mascot, this restaurant had a white bunny bouncing around underfoot which seemed very natural to the servers.
