Family Trip to Cancun staying at the Krystal Resort

When Lyn returned from her early spring excursion to Canada we all decided it would be great to meet her at the airport in Cancun and then stay a couple of nights to enjoy the beaches and the resort. We got up fairly early and were all packed to go and Fabian was kind enough to drive us to the bus station at Alta Brisa where we could catch the ADO bus. Although there were busses available to take us directly to the airport, the cost on these was almost 500 pesos each. We decided to take the normal bus and then take a taxi to the airport to meet Lyn. The bus cost 286 pesos for an adult and 143 for each child with a taxi ride from the bus station in Cancun to the airport for an additional 100 pesos so we saved quite a bit of money doing it this way. There are many different options and pricing available to travel by ADO bus from Merida to Cancun but this one was the least expensive and had us arriving a couple of hours before Lyn.

Something to note, Lyn was flying on Delta this time and we actually picked her up at Terminal 2 instead of the other terminal where we normally pick up international flights. At this terminal, you cannot actually wait right where the passengers leave the airport as it is restricted for people with bus transfers only through the tour companies. There is a restaurant there that you can wait at, very expensive and we only shared a pop while waiting. Once Lyn arrived we were able to enter the restricted area and then get on our bus to the resort in Cancun.

View from our room on the 8th floor

The Krystal Resort is located on kilometer 9 on the Hotel Zone in Cancun, this is a great location and is definitely where all the nightlife and action is. We had booked on a promotion with this hotel and actually looked at 3 different rooms before we were happy with the last room offered to us. There was a little fee with upgrading, but now we were on the eighth floor in a corner overlooking the beaches and ocean. Much happier! The boys certainly loved the view from the elevator as it looked back over Cancun as it whisked us to the top floor. Evan and Noah did race us up and down a few times on the stairs as we took the elevator. Lyn did try coming up with them once… I did not try this race:) The elevator seemed much easier and I always had beverages in my hand as it was very difficult for me to walk past the bar on the way to the elevator.

There was breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets available with the all inclusive package as well as an afternoon Sushi Bar. Evan and I ate Sushi almost every day for lunch, without the philadelphia cream cheese of course! The hotel was also associated with a neighboring Mexican restaurant which was included in the all inclusive package. We made reservations and ate at this restaurant two different times and were very impressed. The first night there, a magician came to our table and had the boys giggling for almost 30 minutes as he did trick after trick. The musicians wandering around singing authentic Spanish songs was wonderful and certainly added to the ambiance of the room.

The Krystal Resort certainly had a wide variety of guests the week we were there. There is a convention center across the street and there were a lot of guests staying who were partaking in a convention. It was spring break for many students… and there were certainly a lot of 2o something’s wandering around drinking excessively! And then there were a few families with children playing in the pools. There was a kids program, but there did not seem to be enough children around to really get it going and our boys never went into it. The mixture of guests allowed us to have the pool area mostly to ourselves during the day. The drunk kids were not up and about until after lunch! The convention people were off in the convention center. Leaving just a few families hanging around at the pool. You did not have to get up early and put your towels on the beach chairs to save your spot, as there was always great spots to sit at any time of the day.

This was Lyn ‘diving under the wave’ and that is Evan’s hat coming off his head!

The ocean was fantastic and we all really loved playing in the waves. I think Noah loved being held by me to jump over the bigger waves. I tried it with Evan once and it knocked us flying, when I came up for air all I heard was someone saying: “here comes another one sir!” We had to take a little break from the ocean after that one when we finally found our ball caps again. We went on one little walk on the beach to the corner and Evan and I had to walk out on the stones creating a wave break, the stones were super hot! Of course it looked dangerous so Lyn and Noah decided not to go on this little adventure. Evan and I survived it until we were back in the sand on the beach and then Evan stubbed his toe on a rock under the sand and started bleeding (this does not surprise anyone!). So we walked back to the resort where we had the lifeguards patch up his toe… I of course wandered over to the bar to get a couple margarita’s while he was getting bandages!

I had brought the chess board along on the trip and we actually played quite a few games at the pool side. Both Evan & Noah are getting better as they play, as long as they are paying attention and don’t get distracted from having to run to the pool bar for shooters! Their favorite was 7-up and strawberry shooters and they really enjoyed the strawberry margarita’s. We would like to say all their shots and drinks were non-alcoholic and we are hoping they were!

The breakfast buffet was great, lots of fresh fruit and all kinds of hot and cold dishes with fresh fruit juices. Evan had an omelet every day, but once he mixed it up and had a scrambler with cheese… The dinner buffets, while ‘themed’ all seemed the same to us. Chinese night seemed like a fajita without tortillas, Mexican night was like a stir-fry with fajitas, Tex-Mex night was like a combined fajita/stir-fry! They had lots of other options but the cooking station was always kind of similar. The burger/pizza/hot dog buffet at lunch was always good. Burgers were cooked to order on the grill and there were a lot of fresh salads to choose from. Of course, after eating at the sushi bar every day, I only snacked on the lunch buffet. We could have had room service also with the all inclusive package, but we were always too full or too tired. Getting up early with the boys and sitting by the pool all day in the sun is a lot of work! I am not sure we stayed up past 9pm any of the nights.
