Canadian Thanksgiving in Progreso

Last week we decided we would cook a turkey and have our newly found Canadian friends over for a little Thanksgiving Day turkey Canadian style. Dinner was fabulous and special thanks to everyone for bringing an amazing dish and helping make the day memorable. We were a little worried about cooking the turkey in a gas oven with fluctuating temperatures all the while more concerned about running out of propane. Houses here have propane tanks for everything: one for the hot water tank and one for the gas stoves. Of course there are no gauges on ours so we had no idea if we had enough gas left to keep the oven going for 6 hours. We had to continually check the oven to make sure there was a flame and just in case I had the charcoal bbq all ready to light if needed.

Lyn organized everything via emails and everybody brought a fabulous dish to the meal. We cooked an amazing 13kg turkey brought to our house early that morning by Dana, Fabian, Adian, Vida, and Quincella. Dana had plans to go to a turkey farm and chase down the turkey but instead went to a local store which only sells turkeys of any size by pre-order. We were responsible for stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy and cooking the turkey. Lyn had made name tags out of mini pumpkins stuffed with candies for the children.

Dorota, Gulam, Mateus, and Sophia brought a yummy greek salad and amazing steamed mixed vegetable tray with toasted bread crumbs. Holly, Rob, Oliver & Isha brought a fabulous concoction of baked beets in the crock pot and apple pie. Suzanne, James, Joshua & Natalia brought an Oreo Cookie cake for dessert. Every family chipped in and brought beverages and plates and cutlery, extra patio table and the dinner was a success.

The kids all played soccer on the beach, jumped on the trampoline, and swam in the pool until dinner was ready. We had bought them all a bag of marbles to play on the beach. After dinner while the adults enjoyed some bevvies, the kids all watched a movie in the boys room while Noah slept.

Best lines of the night:

Dana: “Are you House?”

James: ” REAL Canadian Gravy and a WHOLE pot of it!”

Adian: “No cake thank you, more stuffing please”

Noah: “Mom, I am tired”

Looks like a great spread….Did Vida ever get into the water???? And is that a pier we see out in the ocean??
Just because we aren’t getting there until mid-January does not mean we do not expect a turkey dinner!!

I think Vida fell in a little later but not on purpose! She normally plays at the end of the pool area only. Yes there is the main cruise ship dock in the background.
Lyn says she will cook a small turkey for you guys!
