Xcambo Yucatan ruins

On Sunday we had the pleasure of accompanying our friends to several locations. The first stop of the day was to Xcambo, which is located on the way from Progreso to Telchac Pueblo in the Yucatan. While these are Mayan ruins, they are not as old as some of them and apparently this site was often used for religious purposes only, and not for day to day living.

A great little site to explore if you are in the area, it was free for us and I am not sure if that was because our friends paid for us, or if it is free on Sundays, or if it is always free! Most archaeological sites are free on Sundays for Mexicans and most of the time this includes people with their visas.

All the boys had a blast running and jumping around these ruins in the heat of the day! I caught Evan jumping from one ruin to the next, probably not approved by his mother but at least he yelled at me first so I could take his picture as he leaped.

We did see a couple of interesting bugs: one millipede and one very funny shaped spider in its web. Other than that a guide book or an actual guide would be a great thing to acquire as you wander around the ruins. It is always nice to be able to climb up on the ruins and see things from that vantage point. Like the flocks of flamingoes in the distant lagoons.

Can’t believe you are still finding more ruins to explore! These appear to be in very good shape. Have they been restored? What a great way to spend a Sunday.

It seems as though some of them may have been restored, but not much. These are much newer ruins than most and were not destroyed by the Spanish conquistadors.
