Campeche – with Grandma & Grandpa

Tags

One of the tourist type things that we did this year with grandma and grandpa was to visit the city of Campeche. I wish we had more time to explore this beautiful city but we had a little late start, then started on our drive. The roads from Progreso to Campeche were perfect! We had recently driven this highway in September and it was still under construction, but this time, there was only one little detour and we flew along.

Campeche is a city you could explore for days. There was some fabulous historical buildings, a beautiful centro and much much more hidden behind the scenes.

We wandered around this World Heritage Site for a little bit and then jumped on the tour trolley to see downtown area. What a great way to see the city! Beautiful streets with old colonial homes lining the narrow streets. Evidence of the history of the city is every where. Pirates used to attack this city so it is built to defend against these attacks.

We then drove to the main fort which looks over the gulf of Mexico and has a museum in it. The power was out in the museum so they were not charging anybody for the entrance which was great! The view of the coast was amazing from here and the boys loved climbing on the canons! Grandma did not make the journey up these stairs but instead started the tour of the museum area ahead of us. Many of the items had an English description on them which was great for all of us.

We had lunch at a restaurant on the beach but it was a windy and cloudy day so we did not get to enjoy the coast of Campeche as we would have liked.

I could not begin to describe this city accurately in my little blog so here is a link to a site which has a lot of information if you are planning a trip to the area http://www.campeche.travel/en/destinos/campeche I know that next time we visit Campeche, we will refer to this site and be prepared to EXPLORE!
